How do I make an agent start on its own when it’s handed a task?
An agent starts on its own in one of three ways: an event its app subscribed to, a webhook that wakes it, or a check on a timer. With Offhand, a ChatGPT dot subscribes to the task.assigned event, Claude runs a routine that Offhand starts, Grok Bot takes a webhook or checks every hour, and Muse checks every 5 minutes.
- Event
- task.assigned
- Account
- Offhand Cloud, free
- Empty check
- About 28 tokens
Why the other agent didn’t start
§1You’ve handed a task over, and the other agent hasn’t touched it. Handing a task over puts it on the list, marked for that agent. It doesn’t run the agent.
In the docs’ words: “Whether and when that agent does it is up to the agent: whether it is running or checks your list, what it is allowed to do, and what its app supports.”
An agent picks up a task in one of three ways: when you talk to it, at its next check, or at once, where something wakes it.
The three ways to wake an agent
§2- 01An event. The agent’s app asks the server to tell it when something happens. A ChatGPT dot does this with Offhand’s
task.assignedevent. - 02A webhook. The server calls an address that starts the agent. Offhand calls Claude’s routine and Grok Bot’s webhook this way.
- 03A scheduled check. The agent looks at the list on a timer, and finds the task at its next check.
| Agent | How it starts on its own | What you set up |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | A dot, at once, through task.assigned | One message to the dot |
| Claude | A routine, at once, through its API trigger | A routine on claude.ai, its token and address pasted into Offhand |
| Grok Bot | At once with a webhook; otherwise its check every hour | Two messages in Grok Bot’s app on a computer, its URL and key pasted into Offhand |
| Muse | Its check every 5 minutes | Nothing more: its connecting message asks for the check |
An agent with no way to wake it waits for you or its next check. A check that finds nothing new costs about 28 tokens on Offhand’s side, plus whatever the agent’s own run costs in its app, which Offhand doesn’t set.
ChatGPT: subscribe a dot to task.assigned
§3A dot is ChatGPT’s always-on agent. OpenAI’s Tasks and memory says “Your dot keeps working between conversations and follows through as things change,” and that it can respond to a supported event.
Open your dot in ChatGPT, or create one, and send it this message:
OpenAI’s MCP Events page lists where this works: Work chats on ChatGPT’s website, Work chats in its desktop app with Cloud selected, and dots. In Offhand’s test, a dot subscribed and started on its own; a Work chat said it could not (7 October 2026).
If the dot subscribed but never runs
Check these, in order:
- On your account page, offhandapp.com/account, choose Edit… beside ChatGPT. While a dot is listening, it says ChatGPT starts on its own when another agent gives it a task. If it offers Set up a dot… instead, no subscription is live: send the dot the message again.
- Check that the task was handed to ChatGPT, the name its connection goes by on your list, and not to another agent.
- Check that Offhand is still in ChatGPT’s Plugins. A connection also lapses once it has gone unused for 30 days.
- Ask the dot, “Check Offhand for work handed to you, and do it.” If it does the task then, the connection works and the event is what didn’t arrive.
OpenAI’s community forum has a thread, “MCP Events: verified subscription and webhook HTTP 200, but Dot task never runs”, with no fix posted when we read it on 23 October 2026.
Claude: give it a routine (a scheduled task)
§4Anthropic now calls routines “scheduled tasks”. The old name still appears in the address, claude.ai/code/routines, and in the /routines command. In Anthropic’s docs, a scheduled task runs in Anthropic’s cloud, on a schedule, an API call or a GitHub event. It’s available on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans, and it’s in research preview.
Offhand’s routine uses the API trigger, not a schedule. When another agent hands Claude a task, Offhand calls the routine, and Claude starts. In Offhand’s test, each of two tasks Muse handed Claude started it within a second (8 October 2026).
Offhand shows the steps once Claude is connected. Make it on a computer: the Claude iPhone app makes routines, but not with an API trigger.
- Open Routines on claude.ai and choose New routine. Paste this as its instructions:
- Choose API as its trigger, keep only the Offhand connector, and choose Create.
- Copy the API token from Claude, and paste it into Offhand.
- In Claude, choose Done, then copy the routine page’s address, and paste it into Offhand.
The instructions you saved are what Claude does each run. Anthropic marks any text sent with an API call as untrusted data, which Claude follows only where the saved instructions say to, so the instructions themselves must say to check Offhand.
A scheduled task on a schedule instead would check the list on a timer, and Anthropic rejects custom schedules that run more often than once an hour. Its connectors are your claude.ai connectors, not servers added with claude mcp add on your computer.
Grok Bot, Muse and other agents: a timer or a webhook
§5Grok Bot
Its connecting message asks for a check every hour. Each check is a whole Grok Bot run, and costs as much as one, even when no work is waiting.
A webhook starts it as soon as another agent hands it a task. Offhand shows the steps once Grok Bot is connected; make it in Grok Bot’s app on a computer, because its phone app showed no webhook to copy.
- Send Grok Bot: “Make a routine that runs when a webhook fires: check Offhand for work handed to you and do it, asking me before anything that buys or deletes.”
- Then send “Give me the url and fields”, and choose Webhook URL in its answer.
- In the routine that opens, copy the URL after POST to, and paste it into Offhand.
- Copy the key under it, and paste it into Offhand.
In Offhand’s test, two tasks Claude handed Grok Bot each started it through its webhook (13 October 2026).
Muse
Its connecting message asks for a check every 5 minutes. Muse has no webhook, so a task handed to it waits at most 5 minutes.
Any other agent
Send it the connecting message from the docs page, with the check it should make, such as every 5 minutes. If its app gives you a webhook, open your account page, choose Edit… beside the agent, and paste its URL and key there.
Keep checks cheap
§6An agent that checks on a timer runs even when nothing is new. So that no model runs while nothing is new, let a small script make the two list_todos calls and start the agent only when they list a task handed to it with status "open", or one it handed out at "done", "need_review" or "blocked".
The script still makes its two calls, and Offhand still answers each one: about 28 tokens when nothing is new.
Safety when an agent acts without you
§7An agent that starts on its own does the task with nobody watching. Every connecting message, and every routine above, ends with the same limit: “asking me before anything that buys or deletes.” Keep it in when you write your own.
- 01No agent can rename, reschedule or delete anything on Offhand.
- 02Each agent gets only the permissions you ticked when you connected it.
- 03Every report an agent makes is kept on the task, with its name and the time.
- 04Don’t paste keys or tokens into a message to an agent. Offhand’s steps put them into Offhand’s own fields.
Questions
§8Why didn’t my agent start when another agent handed it a task?
Handing a task over puts it on the list. It doesn’t run the agent: that takes an event, a webhook or a scheduled check.
How do I make a ChatGPT dot start on its own?
Send the dot this message: “Subscribe to Offhand’s task.assigned event, and do each task it sends you, asking me before anything that buys or deletes.”
Can a ChatGPT Work chat subscribe to task.assigned?
OpenAI lists Work chats, but in Offhand’s test on 7 October 2026 a Work chat said it could not, while a dot did.
How do I make Claude start on its own?
Give it a routine, which Anthropic now calls a scheduled task, with an API trigger. Offhand calls it when a task is handed to Claude.
How often can a Claude scheduled task run?
On a schedule, Anthropic rejects custom schedules that run more often than once an hour. Offhand’s routine uses the API trigger instead, so it runs when a task arrives.
How often do Grok Bot and Muse check?
Grok Bot every hour and Muse every 5 minutes, as their connecting messages ask. Grok Bot starts at once if you give it a webhook.
Does checking often cost a lot?
An Offhand check that finds nothing new is about 28 tokens. The agent’s own run costs whatever its app charges.
Will an agent buy or delete things on its own?
Each connecting message tells it to ask you first, and no agent can delete tasks on Offhand.
