Offhand collects nothing

There is no account to make, no server to talk to, and no analytics. Offhand makes no network requests of its own. The one exception is iCloud sync, which is off until you turn it on: it puts your tasks and notes — and your recordings, on a second switch — into your iCloud, and nowhere else. Never to us; we have nothing to receive them with. This page exists because the App Store requires one, and because a claim this broad should be written down somewhere it can be held against us.

What Offhand stores, and where

Recordings

The audio of each note, written into Offhand’s own container on your device. Kept until you delete it, unless you ask otherwise: Keep recordings for in Settings offers 1 week, 30 days, 1 year, or keep forever, and keep forever is what a new install starts on. Whatever you choose, a recording is spared if the note is bookmarked, if it has no transcript, or if an open task still points at it.

Transcripts and tasks

The words Offhand heard, the tasks it made from them, and their dates and times. Kept until you delete them — the transcript is the durable record, which is why the audio can expire and it does not.

Settings

Which language Offhand listens in, whether the Calendar feature is on, and whether you have seen the introduction. Stored in the app’s own preferences on the device.

All of it lives in a container shared between Offhand and its widget on the same phone. It goes nowhere else unless you switch on iCloud sync, and then it goes to your own iCloud account and no further. There is no Offhand server. Nobody at Offhand can read any of it, because there is nothing for us to read it from.

What the phone does with your voice

Recognition

Apple’s SpeechAnalyzer, running on the device, in the one language you chose. No audio is uploaded for recognition, ever — not to Apple, not to us, not to anyone.

Turning it into tasks

Apple’s Foundation Models framework, running on the device. There is no API key in this app, no prompt logging, and no remote model it falls back to when the local one struggles. When the local model cannot run, Offhand saves the note and tells you it found no tasks.

Offline by construction

Every feature works in airplane mode, because none of them was built to need a network. This is checkable: put the phone in airplane mode, or watch it through a proxy, and you will see no request.

The four ways anything can leave

All four are things you do on purpose, and all four are off until you do them. We list them because a privacy page that only says “nothing ever leaves” is the kind that turns out to have a footnote.

01iCloud sync. Two settings, both off until you turn them on. The first keeps your tasks and notes the same on every device signed into your iCloud; the second, separate because recordings are far larger, adds the audio. They go into your private iCloud storage and no further — never to us, and never to anyone else. Turning the recordings switch back off removes those copies from iCloud and leaves every recording on the phone.
02Show in Calendar. A setting, off by default, that mirrors your scheduled tasks into an “Offhand” calendar in Apple’s Calendar app. It needs calendar permission, and turning it off removes that calendar and its events. The mirroring sends us nothing — but if your Calendar is set to sync with iCloud, iOS will sync those event titles like any other calendar event. That is your Calendar setting rather than an Offhand one, and we would rather you knew than discovered it.
03Handoff and Shortcuts. Where Offhand hands text to another app you picked, that app’s rules apply from that moment. Nothing is copied or sent on its own.
04Anything you share yourself. Copying a transcript, exporting, sending a task to someone. Ordinary, and worth naming.

Permissions, and what each is for

Calendar	Optional	Only for “Show in Calendar” above. Never asked for unless you turn that on.

Offhand does not ask for speech-recognition permission. Recognition happens on the device inside the app’s own recording, so the second prompt would buy nothing and we do not show it.

Taking a permission back. Every one of these can be withdrawn at any time in Settings → Offhand on your iPhone, and none of them needs our involvement to withdraw. Turning off the microphone stops Offhand recording. Turning off Calendar access, or switching “Show in Calendar” off inside the app, removes the Offhand calendar and its events. Turning off Notifications stops the alerts and the badge and leaves everything else working. There is no consent held on a server anywhere for us to clear.

Deleting things

Deleting a note removes its transcript and its audio from the phone, and that cannot be undone. Deleting the app removes everything at once — there is no copy anywhere else to come back for, and nothing to close, because there is no account. Recordings are kept until you delete them, unless you set an age limit in Settings — nothing ages out on its own until you ask it to.

Children, and changes

Offhand is rated 4+ and collects nothing from anyone of any age, so there is no children’s data to handle differently. If this policy ever changes it will change here first, with the date at the top, and any change that widens what the app does will be described in the app’s release notes rather than left to be noticed.

Laws such as the GDPR and the CCPA give people rights to see, correct, export and delete the personal data a company holds about them. We hold none — there is no server, no account and no copy of anything you record. Those rights are exercised on your own device: everything Offhand has is in the app, and deleting it, or deleting the app, is the whole of it. The terms of service cover the rest of the agreement.
