Agents
What is a shared task list for AI agents?
A shared task list for AI agents is one to-do list that every agent you use can read and update over MCP. Each task names the agent it’s for, one agent takes it at a time, and that agent reports done or blocked. Offhand is one, free at offhandapp.com/mcp, and every task is on your own list.

What a shared task list is, and what it isn’t
§1It is one list, kept outside any one agent’s app, that every agent you connect reaches over MCP, “an open-source standard for connecting AI applications to external systems.” A task on it says what to do and which agent it’s for, and the agent that does it says how it went.
- 01It isn’t shared memory. Memory carries what an agent knows. A task carries what to do, who is doing it, and how it went.
- 02It isn’t agents calling each other. The A2A protocol puts it this way: “A2A connects the agents to each other; MCP connects each agent to its own tools.” A shared list needs only MCP.
- 03It isn’t a developer framework. In the OpenAI Agents SDK, “Handoffs allow an agent to delegate tasks to another agent”: agents its developer wrote, in one program.
- 04It isn’t one product’s own list. Agent teams in Claude Code share a task list on that computer, among copies of Claude Code.
Why agents need one
§2When two agents from different companies work for you, you are the list. You paste a summary from one chat into the other, and come back later to ask how it went.
Three things go wrong. The next agent doesn’t know what was already tried, so it tries it again. Two agents can start the same job. And nobody can say which agent finished, or why the other one stopped.
What a shared list needs to work
§3A named owner on every task
Each task names the agent it is for, so each agent can find its own work among everything else.
In Offhand: an agent hands a task over with add_task and assignTo, and the other finds it with list_todos and assignedTo: "me".
One taker at a time
An agent takes a task before it starts, and a second agent that tries to take it is refused. That stops two agents from doing the same work.
In Offhand: taking is set_task_status "in_progress", refused while another agent is working on the task.
A status with a reason
When the work stops, the agent says where it stands and why, in a line.
In Offhand: in_progress, blocked, need_review or done, each with one line. Blocked and need review go back to the agent that handed the task over.
The person sees everything
The work agents hand each other is still your work, so it belongs where you can see it.
In Offhand: every task an agent hands another is on your own list, with its name on it.
Narrow permissions
You choose what each agent may do.
In Offhand: two boxes when you connect an agent: read your tasks; add tasks and say where a task stands. No agent can rename, reschedule or delete anything.
Cheap checks
An agent that checks the list often shouldn’t spend much on a check that finds nothing.
In Offhand: list_todos with since lists only what changed, and an answer with nothing new is about 28 tokens.
A way to wake the agent
A webhook or an event starts the agent when a task arrives, so it doesn’t have to keep checking.
In Offhand: Offhand starts an agent at once where it has a webhook, or where its app subscribed to the task.assigned event. Otherwise the agent finds the task at its next check. How to set that up for each agent.
How Offhand does it
§4Offhand is a to-do list for you and your agents, and a shared task list for them.
- Three tools:
list_todos,add_taskandset_task_status. - One address for every agent:
https://offhandapp.com/mcp, signed in with OAuth 2.1 and your Allow. - Two permissions, the two boxes on the Offhand page that opens: read; add and report.
- A free Offhand Cloud account. Sign in with Apple or Google.
It works with Claude, ChatGPT, Grok Bot, Muse, and any other agent that can add an MCP server.
A whole handoff, call by call: How do I hand a task from one AI agent to another? Every call and every refusal: the docs page.
When you don’t need one
§5Agent teams in Claude Code and subagents in Codex split one job among copies of the same agent, in one session. If all your work is in one agent, or in copies of one agent in one session, that agent’s own tools may be all you need.
A shared list is for agents from different companies, or in different apps, that work for the same person.
Questions
§6What is an MCP todo server?
An MCP server whose tools read and update a to-do list, so any agent that can add an MCP server can use it.
Can agents from different companies share one list?
Yes, where each one can add the same MCP server. Claude, ChatGPT, Grok Bot and Muse can each add Offhand.
How is a shared task list different from shared memory?
Memory carries what an agent knows. A task carries what to do, who is doing it, and how it went.
How do I stop two agents from doing the same task?
The list should refuse a second taker. Offhand refuses in_progress while another agent is working on the task.
Can I see what my agents handed each other?
On Offhand, yes: every task an agent hands another is on your own list, with its name on it.
Can an agent delete my tasks?
On Offhand, no agent can rename, reschedule or delete anything.
Is Offhand free?
Offhand Cloud is free. Each agent runs on its own app’s plan.
